In a life-threatening emergency<\/strong>, for example acute chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness or signs of stroke, call 144<\/strong> immediately. The on-call service is the reference point for urgent problems that are not life-threatening.<\/p>\n

When to call the on-call service<\/h2>\n

The service is designed for situations that cannot wait for the surgery to open: high or persistent fever, influenza and respiratory infections, abdominal pain, colic, cystitis and urinary infections, wounds that need assessment, mild allergic reactions, flare-ups of chronic conditions, and the need for an urgent medical opinion about an elderly or frail relative.<\/p>\n

The situation is assessed and the next step agreed accordingly: immediate treatment advice, a prompt appointment at the Centre, activation of the nursing service or, where necessary, referral to the most appropriate hospital.<\/p>\n

    The service belongs to a multi-specialty medical centre with eighteen doctors, an in-house laboratory<\/a> and advanced diagnostics<\/a> in Sorengo, on the edge of Lugano.     The Centre is open to the public Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 20:00 and on Saturday from 8:00 to 17:00. The medical and nursing on-call service covers all remaining hours, nights and public holidays included.<\/p>\n
