In this area the word aesthetic almost always comes last. The women who come here start from a symptom: burning, dryness, pain during intercourse, urine leakage, itching that does not go away. What is needed first is not a treatment, it is a diagnosis.

Dr Nadia Bernocchi, FMH specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Her work brings together gynaecological endocrinology, chronic vulvar conditions and regenerative medicine of the genital area.
What we treat
Chronic vulvar conditions
Lichen sclerosus, vulvar dermatoses, vulvodynia. These are medical conditions, often diagnosed late after years of generic treatment. They require a correct diagnosis, an appropriate first-line therapy and surveillance over time, because some of them carry a risk that must be kept under control.
Genitourinary syndrome of menopause
Dryness, burning, pain during intercourse, recurrent urinary symptoms. This is not an aesthetic chapter and it is the consequence of a documentable hormonal change. The pathway begins with clinical assessment and with tests from the in-house laboratory, and continues with the appropriate local medical and hormonal therapy.
Regenerative medicine of the genital area
Platelet-rich plasma, on indication, in some of these conditions. The available evidence is not the same for every indication and in this area it is still limited (the state of the evidence, indication by indication): what is known and what is not is said in consultation, and set out in the report.
On so-called vaginal rejuvenation
Energy-based devices, laser and radiofrequency, are widely offered for this indication. In July 2018 the US FDA issued a safety communication on their use for vaginal rejuvenation and for the treatment of symptoms related to menopause, noting that safety and effectiveness had not been established for those indications.
The Centre does not use them, not out of a principled position against technology, but because in this area, today, the indication is not there. If the evidence changes, our answer will change too, and we will say so.
The pelvic floor, in men and women
The pelvic floor is not a women’s topic. The same structures, with different problems, concern men as well: incontinence, chronic pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction. At Medical Center Sorengo the two sides are followed by two FMH specialists in the same practice, Dr Bernocchi and Dr Negrini, with the same laboratory and the same clinical file.
